  • Self-guided tour through the museum and grounds of the former concentration camp, learning about the Holocaust and the history of the camp.

  • An extremely sobering and chilling experience, but one that was essential in understanding Germany and its history in its entirety.

  • I chose to take no pictures out of respect for the memorial and the lives that were lost there.

-Arrival in Munich at Hotel Blauer Bock

  • Check into hotel, get room assignments

  • The hotel was in a fantastic location, very close to the major sight.

Memorable Moments

  • Viktualienmarkt- This market was one of my favorite parts of Munich. It was very festive and lively, and represented core parts of German culture with its Maypole, stalls of different foods and goods, and beer garden.

  • Dinner Together-Authentic German experience! The restaurant reminded me of the Germany part of Epcot in Disney World! The waiters and waitresses had lederhosen on and I had my first pretzel and beer in Germany!

  • Visiting the Hofbrauhaus-  a grand, beautiful beer hall with walls of beer mugs and rows and rows of tables. There was a German band playing traditional German music with horns and lederhosen.

Overall

So excited to finally be in Germany! Munich is an authentic German city with incredible depth and character.

Day 7-Day Two in Munich

    • A clock tower in the New Town Hall with motorized figurines that spin and dance, acting out a story to the music of the bells.

  • Lunch at Der Pschorr

  • Tour of the Residenz Palace including the treasury and the Cuvillies Theater

    • Stunning and jaw-dropping are not enough to describe the exquisite interior of the palace! It felt like stepping into a fairytale! The epitome of royalty!

  • Dinner at Hofbrauhaus with Some Group Members

    • One of my favorite dinners of the trip!

    • We got pretzels the size of our heads and tried some more traditional German cuisine.

    • I nearly drank an entire liter mug of beer on my own! I was very proud of myself!

    • After dinner we wandered around the city a bit, making our way back to our hotel, and were able to see another part of Munich; the more modern, residential side.

Sights We Saw

Viktualienmarkt with its Maypole, St. Peter’s Church, Old Town Hall, Marienplatz, New Town Hall, walked down Kaufingerstrasse,  Frauenkirche, Hofbrauhaus, Munich Stadtmuseum, Heiliggeistkirche, Stradtsparkasse, Residenz Palace, Opera House, walked down the Residenzstrasse, Theatine Church, Feldherrnhalle, Viscardigasse, Maximilianstrasse, Regierung von Oberbayern, Museum of Five Continents.

Memorable Moments

  • Glockenspeil Clock Show in Marienplatz- such a great tradition in Munich. The Marienplatz was another one of my favorite spots in Munich. It is so gorgeous, the true heart of the city. And you can see the iconic towers of the Frauenkirche.

  • Residenz Palace- So unbelievably grand and gorgeous. I always wanted to see rococo style decor in person, and it felt like walking in a dream. So whimsical and lavish. My favorite rooms were the Green Gallery and Porcelain Cabinet. I could sit in some of those rooms for hours if I had the chance.

  • Dinner at Hofbrauhaus- It was really fun! Such an incredible atmosphere! The place was packed, the band was playing in the background, we sat by a wall of beer mugs. For dinner, I tried to order a German sausage, and I thought that I was by ordering a wiener sausage, but when my dinner came I realized I accidentally ordered four plain bunless hotdogs! So funny! But one of my group members let me have some of her weinerschnitzel which was so nice, and great to try.

Overall

We were able to truly get to know Munich through our walking tour as well as by exploring it on our own. I adore Munich! Although it is a city, it feels like a small town or village, and it is extremely walkable.
